The MEZ-team would like to thank all participating schools and teachers and especially the students for their personal commitment and great support! More than 1800 pupils from 72 schools took part in the first survey. For the second survey period, new schools were added to the panel, which allowed testing children on their linguistic abilities in 80 different schools.
Both surveys were planned and organized by IEA DPC institute. Many schools were visited directly by staff members of MEZ, which allowed witnessing the cooperativeness and diligence pupils used to complete the tasks. Participants were tested in their proficiencies in German, in their heritage languages Russian and Turkish, as well as in their abilities in the foreign languages English, French and Russian. Moreover, they filled in questionnaires concerning the use of languages in their private and educational everyday life, their professional ambitions and wishes, and their social environment.
First results from the first period are for example:
1.030 out of the 1.818 pupils grew up with only German as their first language, whereas 309 were (additionally) raised in Russian and 479 (additionally) in Turkish. Every participant learned English in school, 780 also learned French, and 69 Russian. Furthermore, of those 72 participating schools, 68 are offering French as a foreign language, in 13 schools pupils have the chance to learn Russian from class 7 and/or 9, and only in 3 schools neither French nor Russian are offered.
